A Network Penetration Test's goal is to simulate a malicious actor in a safe and controlled fashion to identify potential weaknesses in an organization's infrastructure. Effectively, you are hiring ethical hackers to help you find weaknesses before they are discovered by malicious hackers.

• External Penetration Test - Used to simulate an attacker coming in from the publicly accessible internet. The test is most effective when the scope of the test includes all of the organization's internet accessible systems. This type of test is usually performed once a year. If your organization has any sort of internet presence, this penetration test will be very helpful!
• Internal Penetration Test - Most companies are more resilient to external attacks. However, if an attacker can get a foothold into the organization through leaked passwords or through a phishing campaign, the dynamics change. The Internal Penetration Test's goal is to measure the organization's cyber resiliency against attackers that have gained a foothold into the organization. The harder it is for an attacker to access sensitive data, the easier it will be to find and stop the attacker. This type of test is usually performed in companies with a higher cyber security maturity level.
